How an analysis I made (with HarrisX) ended up in the Wall Street Journal
Working at the research firm HarrisX has brought amazing opportunities. HarrisX is constantly cited in business and political news articles. I was super excited to find out at the beginning of this year that an analysis we conducted was published on the Wall Street Journal.
As you can see in the image above, this chart shows the amount of original episodes each streaming service released every quarter. This data shows us that Netflix is superior when it comes to original content. Or as the WSJ stated “Netflix has made no secret of its strategy for keeping the streaming-video crown: more original shows, and lots of them”.
Unfortunately, I won’t (and probably can’t) be showing the analysis and code for obtaining this dataset and summarizing it into this chart. However, it was made web-scraping several websites, one being TV Maze, which is a website that contains all information on television shows.
With Netflix and streaming services in general being so private with their data, it is amazing how you can use tools such as web-scraping and APIs to get the information you need. And hey! maybe your analysis will end-up being quoted in a major news piece. I look forward to sharing more on web-scraping in the future, in the meantime, going to binge-watch some shows on Netflix.
